Repúblicas, a solo exhibition of the utopic world of Luciano Denver in Barcelona, features the artist’s most recent photomontages where he continues to explore geographic identities and reflections on architecture. The show includes Republic of the Andes and Republic of the Caribbean, both inspired on the artist’s travels through the Andes and the Colombian Caribbean coast.
Denver’s vivid, thought-provoking photographs are products of real images reconstructed into compositions from his own imagination. Magical realism emerges from the strong visual vocabulary of the works that are seductively close to reality, pushing its boundaries through technology. The viewer experiences a glimpse of the different capitals of these imaginary republics and, through his gaze, becomes the only life present in the work; a citizen, a solitary observer.
Repúblicas is a unique voyage that highlights a distinctive architecture and visual culture of South America, charged with identity and the history of its past. Denver dilutes territorial borders to confront the limits they impose. The works question political, geographic and cultural paradigms, while the artist investigates the continent in search of its identity.
Even the artist’s own personal heritage carries the same nostalgia latent in his work; his grandparents migrated to Argentina after the First World War with hope of finding a better future. Repúblicas is a confrontation of reality via hyper realistic photomontages, magical and simultaneously confirming Garcia Marquez’s own words, “reality is always superior to fiction”. This exhibition allows the spectator to become a native of this mythical world that comes about through the camera and is turned into paradise through the artist’s imagination.
